Dear Joel, I've started to learn Smoke since 2013 version came out.
ReplyDeleteI really love to WATCH your tutorials and to learn from such an expert. And you're quick!
Though, for me as a beginner is very difficult to understand the logic of nodes workflow.
When and why should I choose different kinds of nodes, ways to connect them, etc.
I see Grand's tutorials, read Brian's blog about each node, but I'm still not there. I understand that this is a question of experience and a lot of playing, but yet I ask you for any suggestions.

nodes are one of those things that until it properly clicks you are often left scratching your head, I first learnt nodes in shake and it was probably a solid 6 months before I really started to get just how powerful they were.
ReplyDeleteThen theres the interface factor with smoke which is also its own beast, it would have taken me even longer to learn nodes in smoke if i was jumping straight in with zero node experience.
There are so many different ways to comp stuff together and the way you pipe it is completely subjective once things start getting creative.
I do realise my tutorials are quick as they are not really aimed at beginners, however if you did have a grounding in nodes lots of my workflows would make more sense.
When i was originally learning smoke I used to force myself to recreate jobs I had done in another program, maybe that would be a good place to start
hope that all made sense
